Ipswich's Royal Charter of 1200 beat Magna Carta by fifteen years. The Charter Festival marks 825 years since King John freed its merchants to trade.
Ipswich Minster – over 1,000 years of shared history
St Mary le Tower began as a timber Anglo-Saxon church above the Gipping flood plain. King John's Charter was presented in its grounds in 1200.
