Promotion to the Premier League should inspire new love for the town.

May 4th 2024 is a date that will live forever in the memory of Town fans, but the party didn’t start there. For every town fan there will be special moments of this season, for our family they are these; that Wes Burns goal, Morsy’s Leicester equaliser, the Sarmiento last-second Southampton thriller, Leaf’s wondrous left boot and of course invading the pitch at full-time.

But it goes beyond the moments at Portman Road, far more than just a game of football.

It has been the walk down with good friends while our boys jump on walls, singing ‘We’ve got super Kieran McKenna’, stopping for sweets in the Co-op on the way, grabbing a chocolate bar for the winner of the score predictions, it’s the swift drink in the Greyhound en route and the celebratory one on the way home too. It’s been the moment’s pre & post-game, a ball at our boys feet in the garden, emulating their heroes and sometimes even getting to meet them, the thrill of putting on the new kit for the first time and the long-distance car journeys for away days.

Ipswich Town Football Club is a professional association football club based in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, that compete in the Premier League, the first tier of English football, following promotion from The Championship One during the 2023–24 season.

We knew whatever would happen, this was a special moment to be part of. And our boys in blue, did not disappoint.

You could protest that the joy of the last two seasons cannot be enjoyed without consideration of the misery of the last decade…though we choose to see Football as being about the here and now…. the last game, the next game, irrelevant…there is only this game, this minute.

And this minute, right now for everyone in Ipswich is pure joy.

The jubilation on the pitch as the full-time whistle blew on May 4th, the elation of the celebration in Christchurch park on May 6th and every minute since with the pride and anticipation for the club, the team, the town and for what may come next.

Let’s hold onto that, in the same way Morsy & McKenna’s men have shown they have, for the pride in the badge. And beyond. The town. The community, for anyone that calls Ipswich, home.

Sir Bobby summed it up better than we could ever do justice when he said: “What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.”

We’re certainly in love again. And cannot wait for the premier league to come to Portman road, again.
