Afternoon Tea Walks

The Ipswich Tourists Guides are pleased to be able to invite you to join the next series of our Afternoon Tea Walks!


Dates and titles for tea walks between October 2024 and April 2025 are :-

  • Fri 11th Oct – Backwaters of Ipswich – Explore the town’s hidden ‘backwaters’ away from the main streets.
  • Wed 23rd Oct – Northern Heights of Ipswich – Leave the town by the North Gate and climb the hill to our original hospital and the barracks.
  • Mon 11th Nov – Ipswich in World War 1 – Commemorate Armistice Day by hearing the stories of the Ipswich V.C.’s.
  • Mon 25th Nov – Stroll with a 100-year old Guide – We will look at some of the reasons to visit Ipswich highlighted in tourist brochures a century ago.
  • Wed 11th Dec – Ipswich Medics – Hear about our Ipswich Nobel Laureate, our first female doctor, and others who helped in the fight against smallpox and gout.
  • Fri 17thJan 2025 – Walking in Wolsey’s Footsteps – Stroll along the streets familiar to Thomas in his youth and visit some of the places he knew.
  • Wed 5th Feb – Theatres & Cinemas – Hear about venues that have provided entertainment for the people of the town since the late 16th century.
  • Mon 24th Feb – Name Dropping – Discover some of the entrepreneurs, adventurers, entertainers and characters who have made their mark on Ipswich.
  • Mon 10th Mar – I Never Noticed That Before – Come on a gentle, easy meander & discover our works of art that you have passed, seen but maybe know nothing about.
  • Wed 26th Mar – Iconic Buildings – Look at some of the buildings from Medieval to Modern that have achieved national recognition, designed by noted architects.
  • Thurs 10th Apr – Strange But True – Hear about some of the unlikely characters from our town’s history, including the Dowager Queen Of France who lived in a seafood restaurant
  • Tues 22nd Apr – Victims & Martyrs – Discover the story of The Ipswich Martyrs and their link to Thomas Wolsey.

Cost £10 per person (including refreshments).  Start 1.30 pm at Ipswich Institute, Admirals House, Tower Street.  Advance bookings can be made directly through the Institute, either in person or using the Guides section on the Institute’s webpage., where further information about each walk can also be found.

All walking dates are included in Ipswich.love events and will be circulated in social media nearer the time

The Ipswich Tourist Guides are a small group of volunteers who organise guided walks within the Borough of Ipswich, Suffolk’s County Town, and one of the oldest towns in England. They have all been trained as tour guides and are keen to share their knowledge of the history and culture of this fascinating East Anglian port.
