Welcome to this season of the Ipswich Tourist Guides’ Guided walks!

Ipswich – Suffolk’s County town, East Anglia’s Waterfront town and home of Ed Sheeran’s favourite football club, Ipswich Town. It’s steeped in history, with hidden gems around every corner. Our trained volunteer guides have many years experience and wide ranging knowledge of Ipswich’s past, present & future. We offer scheduled walking tours (see over), walks tailored to suit the interests of any group, and even ‘armchair’ walks at a static location.
Walks start 2pm from inside The Admiral’s House, 13 Tower St, IP1 3BE and last approximately 90 minutes. Only £6 per person. Bookings at link. Gift vouchers available!

| May 7 | TH | Rags And Bones: Come and explore Ipswich in 1890. This walk is inspired by Frank Grace’s fascinating book ‘Rags and Bones’. We will look for the places he wrote about, hear some of his stories and what it was like living in the slums. This walk finishes on the Waterfront. |

Discover the many buildings and locations that were once drinking places. The loss of many establishments due to neglect or changing social situations. Why beer was safer to drink than water. The influence pubs had on the town and why they were so important to the working classes. A step back to our love of Suffolk Beer. |

| June 4 | TH | Brewers Of Ipswich
More than 250 years after the brewing business left Ipswich, the names Cobbold, Tollemache, Cullingham, Steam Tap and Catchpoles are still heard in the town with great affection. Beer is still very much part of Suffolk’s history. Visit its humble beginnings with Suffolk Masters through to its gradual decline, discover its importance on this journey through the town. |

| June 25 | TH | The River Runs Through It.
Throughout history Ipswich and the Orwell have gone together like Fish and Chips. Take a look at how Ipswich grew; through its Port, its Merchants, Philanthropists, Social Background, Education and Industry to become a Centre of Commerce and a powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution through to its continued growth today. |

The term “Victims” covers quite a variety of interesting people in Ipswich! We also look at the story of some Ipswich Martyrs and their link to Thomas Wolsey. Some burial grounds will feature on this walk, as well as innocent sounding places like The Cornhill. |

Ipswich’s medieval past is still visible today. On this walk, we will explore that past primarily through the town’s defences, religious houses and churches and some secular buildings. |
| July 14 | T | Walking In Constable’s Footsteps
John Constable was a regular visitor to Ipswich. To celebrate the homecoming of his masterpiece, The Hay Wain, come on this walk to explore the buildings and people familiar to the young artist in the early 19th century. |

| July 30 | TH | The Victorian Docks
This walk will take us to the waterfront to hear about the problems faced by the Victorians and how the dock was created. The arrival of the railways and the regeneration of Industry to the area, the growth in employment and wealth and how subsequent changes have created today’s docks. This walk finishes on the waterfront. |

For centuries a defensive rampart of earth banks and ditches encircled the centre of Ipswich. The position of these ancient defences can still be seen in 21st century Ipswich. This ramble explores part of the line of the ramparts and spots hidden signs in modern street layout and names. |

Sixteenth Century Ipswich was a thriving port town. Discover wealthy merchants, Royal visits, and some fine listed buildings. Hear about Cardinal Wolsey, and the vicious consequences of Religious turmoil. |
