ActivLives is launching Wild About Nature, a new Ipswich‑based project designed to help local residents reconnect with the natural world right where they live. The project will give people across the town regular opportunities to get outdoors, learn new skills and help wildlife thrive in their own neighbourhoods.

Funded for two years by The National Lottery Community Fund, Wild About Nature will be based at ActivLives’ urban allotment community garden in Ipswich. Weekly volunteering sessions, beekeeping activities and hands‑on nature projects will bring people together to:
- Grow food and garden sustainably
- Create and care for wildlife‑friendly spaces
- Learn beekeeping skills
- Take part in nature‑based activities both at the garden and out in the wider community

ActivLives would like to thank National Lottery players for making this work possible.
A project shaped for Ipswich communities
Wild About Nature has been designed to be welcoming, inclusive and accessible to people from all backgrounds. Whether someone is completely new to gardening or already passionate about wildlife, the project offers a friendly place to learn, share skills and enjoy the wellbeing benefits of being outdoors.
Participants will explore the biodiversity already present in Ipswich’s green spaces, discover what could be improved, and take positive action together—creating a “green wave” that spreads from the community garden into local streets, estates and neighbourhoods.
The Suffolk Nature Strategy shows that people living in deprived urban areas often have fewer opportunities to engage with nature. This project aims to change that by bringing nature‑based activities directly into Ipswich communities, making it easy for people to get involved close to home.
Why it matters for Ipswich
By joining the project, local people will:
- Improve their physical and mental wellbeing
- Gain confidence and practical skills
- Meet new people and feel more connected to their community
- Help create greener, healthier neighbourhoods for everyone
Together, we can make Ipswich a town where nature is valued, wildlife has space to thrive, and people feel proud of the green places on their doorstep.
