Transformed Ipswich Regent Theatre Celebrates Successful Re-Opening
Exciting news for the Ipswich community as the iconic Ipswich Regent Theatre has triumphantly re-opened following an extensive £3.45 million refurbishment. Ipswich Borough Council proudly welcomes audiences back to this cultural landmark to enjoy this year’s festive panto, Cinderella, performed on the beautifully upgraded stage until 31 December.
Originally established in 1929 as an Art Deco cine-variety theatre, the Regent Theatre has been a hub of entertainment and culture in East Anglia for nearly a century. The recent refurbishment was a vital investment to tackle long-standing challenges including poor accessibility, outdated facilities, and cramped front-of-house areas that impacted visitor experience.
To enable the refurbishment, the theatre temporarily closed in May 2025 with performances relocating to the Corn Exchange. Thanks to meticulous planning by local contractors and the theatres team, practical completion was reached by mid-November, and the building was handed back on time at the end of November.
Key Enhancements and Features
- Restoration of the striking exterior Art Deco frontage and elegant interior plasterwork
- Revamped foyer spaces including the Circle Lounge and three new stylish bars facilitated by a partnership with Adnams, featuring the longest bar Adnams has ever created
- Accessibility upgrades such as a new lift, improved ramp access, modern toilet facilities, and a new staff office
- Upgraded mechanical systems ensuring enhanced comfort for audiences and performers alike
- New fire alarm, intruder alarms, CCTV system, and lighting reminiscent of the original 1920s fixtures
The project was led by KLH Architects who meticulously reinstated historic decorative details, with main construction by Mixbrow Construction Ltd focusing on local craftsmanship. The collaboration with local businesses like Cooks and Son Ltd, Hudsons, and The Great British Lighting Company reflects the community’s shared passion for preserving Ipswich’s heritage.
Community and Industry Praise
Councillor Jane Riley, Ipswich Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture and Customers, expressed her delight: “We’re thrilled that our ambitious plans have been so successfully delivered. The community spirit behind this renewal is inspiring, and the feedback from theatregoers has been overwhelmingly positive. The Regent Theatre is a proud cultural asset at the heart of Ipswich.”
Jenny Hanlon, CEO at Adnams, highlighted how the partnership brought together historical craftsmanship and local business energy: “The renovation showcases what local businesses can achieve when working together. We look forward to serving audiences with great entertainment and, of course, a glass of Adnams.”
The festive panto, Cinderella, is the perfect way to celebrate the theatre’s return to action. With record-breaking box office sales, the show promises magical evenings filled with laughter, fun, and fantastic performances.
