Ipswich's Royal Charter of 1200 beat Magna Carta by fifteen years. The Charter Festival marks 825 years since King John freed its merchants to trade.
Ipswich Minster – over 1,000 years of shared history
St Mary le Tower began as a timber Anglo-Saxon church above the Gipping flood plain. King John's Charter was presented in its grounds in 1200.

The only known Gainsborough painting of Ipswich is of Holywells Park, where Jon Shapcott and his team opened Bishops Café in April 2023.
