How Ipswich Buses’ New Tech is Making Travel Easier and More Accessible

Posted on July 12, 2026 by Press Team

If you regularly hop on a bus around town, you might have noticed a brilliant new upgrade to your journey. Ipswich Buses has recently invested in brand-new onboard passenger information technology, taking a fantastic step forward in making public transport easier, friendlier, and more accessible for everyone in our community.

Supplied by Journeo, the state-of-the-art system gives passengers real-time visual and audio information during their trip. This means you will always know exactly where you are on your route, where the bus is heading, and when your stop is coming up.

Travelling With Confidence

While the technology has been introduced primarily to improve accessibility for customers who are blind, partially sighted, or hard of hearing—providing vital support alongside local champions like Suffolk Sight and the Ipswich Deaf Society—the benefits will actually be felt by a much wider range of passengers. If you’ve ever felt a bit nervous about missing your stop or travelling on an unfamiliar route, this new tech is here to help.

The clear audio and visual announcements help remove the uncertainty that can sometimes make public transport feel a bit daunting. Whether you are a student commuting to the University of Suffolk, an older passenger, a visitor exploring Ipswich for the first time, or just someone who is less familiar with the local network, the system empowers you to travel independently and with total peace of mind.

Welcoming Everyone Aboard

Dan Bassett, Managing Director of Ipswich Buses, shared his thoughts on the brilliant new rollout:

“We want everyone to feel confident when travelling with Ipswich Buses, regardless of how often they use our services or their individual accessibility needs. As well as supporting customers who are blind, partially sighted, hard of hearing or visually impaired, this technology supports everyone, including those who may be less familiar with bus travel. Ultimately, it’s about making journeys easier, more accessible and helping more people travel independently with confidence.”

This fantastic investment is part of Ipswich Buses’ ongoing commitment to improving the customer experience and ensuring that public transport remains an accessible, welcoming option for all members of our community. The upgrade was made possible in part through funding from the UK Government’s Local Authority Bus Grant, secured through the Suffolk Enhanced Partnership.

It’s always wonderful to see local services investing in technology that genuinely makes life better and more inclusive for the people of Ipswich. Next time you are heading out and about, why not leave the car at home, grab a seat on the bus, and enjoy a more relaxed, informed, and accessible journey!
