Young People Bring Colour and Creativity to Ipswich Town Centre

Posted on November 6, 2025 by Miranda Acres

More than forty young people from four secondary schools across Ipswich will soon be making their mark on the town centre this November as part of Youth Voice UNLOCKED – an inspiring new pop-up art trail that celebrates imagination, ambition, and community pride.

Delivered through Thomas Wolsey 550, made possible through #iWill Movement, Volunteering Matters and BBC Children in Need, this creative project gives students a chance to share their hopes for Ipswich’s future through public art. Taking place during #iWill Week (17–21 November 2025), the trail shines a light on the positive role young people play in shaping their town and its identity.

Working alongside a professional artist, the students are creating vibrant “key” designs in shopfronts and vacant spaces throughout the town centre. Each key symbolises something young people feel is vital to help them “unlock” their potential – from opportunities in music and sport to creative and social spaces where they can connect and grow.

Just as Wolsey’s Gate stands as a symbol of ambition and possibility, the new artwork reflects how today’s young people are continuing that legacy through creativity, collaboration, and action.

“This project is all about giving young people a voice – and a visible place in the town they call home,” said Hannah Houghton, Education and Opportunities Lead for Thomas Wolsey 550. “Their designs not only show their artistic talent but also express what they need within Ipswich to help their dreams take shape.”

The Youth Voice UNLOCKED trail will run throughout November 2025, inviting visitors to explore the artworks, celebrate local talent, and join conversations about the future of the town. Passers-by will even be able to see the students painting live on 17 and 18 November.

The initiative is part of the wider Thomas Wolsey 550 programme – a community project founded by Ipswich Central to mark 550 years since the birth of Cardinal Wolsey. The programme celebrates Wolsey’s legacy of learning and opportunity, with education-focused projects and youth-led creative initiatives that continue his vision of empowering young people in Ipswich.
