Celebrating John Constable’s Legacy: The Hay Wain Visits Suffolk for the First Time as Part of CONSTABLE 250

2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Constable (1776-1837), Suffolk’s most celebrated artist and one of the greatest British painters of all time. To honour his life and extraordinary work, Colchester + Ipswich Museums (CIMS) is presenting Constable 250, a year-long series of exhibitions and events showcasing major loans from national collections alongside Ipswich’s own treasures.

A defining highlight of this celebration will be the iconic masterpiece The Hay Wain (1821), on display in Suffolk for the very first time. Although synonymous with the Suffolk countryside, this famous painting was completed in Constable’s London studio. Now, Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich will reunite the artwork with its preparatory sketches held by the Ipswich collection, offering visitors a remarkable insight into Constable’s creative process. This event is made possible thanks to funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Weston Loan Programme supported by the Garfield Weston Foundation and Art Fund.

The Hay Wain depicts the idyllic rural scene at Flatford, near Dedham, with a horse and cart crossing the River Stour beside the iconic Willy Lott’s House—a landscape largely unchanged since Constable’s day. The exhibition celebrates not just the painting itself but the deep connection between Constable’s art and Suffolk, also known as Constable Country.

Three Landmark Exhibitions at Christchurch Mansion

The Constable 250 series at Ipswich’s Christchurch Mansion will feature three landmark exhibitions:

  • Constable: A Cast of Characters (28 March – 14 June 2026) explores the people who inspired Constable, with objects from private and public collections, including never-before-seen letters, costumes, and new sculptures by Sasha Constable, a direct descendant of the artist.
  • Constable: Walking the Landscape (11 July – 4 October 2026) brings together key loans including The Hay Wain and Dedham Vale alongside intimate paintings from Constable’s childhood home, highlighting his deep connection with the natural world.
  • Constable to Contemporary (24 October 2026 – 28 February 2027) contrasts Constable’s legacy with modern artistic responses, reflecting the ongoing relevance of his work.

Community Engagement and Educational Programmes

Alongside the exhibitions, Constable 250 will feature a wide-ranging programme of events and learning opportunities. Suffolk Community Libraries will create an immersive play space touring local libraries for young children, while Suffolk Archives’ Constable on Tour mobile unit will offer workshops to engage diverse audiences. Aspire Black Suffolk will provide a fresh lens on history through creative careers guidance and a new resource book highlighting overlooked historical figures.

Local residents and visitors can also experience a new sound artwork by Stuart Bowditch using field recordings from the actual locations Constable painted, as well as a two-day symposium hosted with the University of Suffolk and the Paul Mellon Centre focused on landscape and environmental change.

A Shared Celebration of Heritage and Culture

This landmark commemoration celebrates Ipswich’s pivotal role in Constable’s story and Suffolk’s rich artistic heritage. Councillor Carole Jones, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Museums at Ipswich Borough Council, emphasises the significance of bringing such world-class artworks to Christchurch Mansion, a cherished local heritage asset.

Thanks to strong partnerships between local authorities, national funders, and cultural organisations, Constable 250 offers an extraordinary opportunity for the community to connect with the natural world, history, and art that define the region.
