Safer Streets in Ipswich: How the Council and Police are Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour and Dangerous Parking

A successful partnership between Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk Police is delivering fantastic results when it comes to tackling anti-social behaviour, persistent street drinking, and dangerous parking.

By teaming up, the Council’s CCTV operators and local police officers have been able to review footage, share crucial evidence, and identify repeat offenders. This collaborative approach means they can take the right action to ensure Ipswich remains a safe, welcoming, and thriving space for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.

Support First, Enforcement When Needed

What makes this initiative so special is its balanced approach to community safety. While enforcement action is being taken—such as issuing Community Protection Notices (CPNs) to persistent street drinkers—it is carefully weighed alongside a strong, compassionate offer of help.

We all recognise that some individuals involved in anti-social behaviour face complex personal challenges. That is why the Council works closely with brilliant local partners, including the Ipswich Housing Action Group (IHAG) and NHS Health Outreach teams. Together, they carry out street welfare checks, conduct housing assessments, and connect vulnerable people with essential services for mental health, physical health, and substance misuse.

Councillor George Lankester, Portfolio Holder for Communities at the Council, explained that rehabilitation is a vital part of their strategy. However, when offers of help are repeatedly turned down and the public is impacted, the Council and Police are fully prepared to step in to protect town centre residents and businesses. In fact, evidence gathered has already helped the police and licensing teams work directly with local premises to ensure responsible alcohol sales.

Safer Streets and Better Parking

Community safety isn’t just about reducing street drinking; it also extends to how people use our roads and pavements. The partnership has cracked down on careless motorists who put others at risk. Using shared evidence, officers have taken action against drivers committing offences such as obstructing footpaths, parking on prohibited road markings, using mobile phones behind the wheel, and failing to wear seatbelts. This makes navigating the town centre much safer and far less stressful for pedestrians, families, and careful drivers.

Inspector Jess Lawlor, of the Ipswich Central Community Policing Team, praised the joint effort, noting that the shared CCTV footage has been absolutely invaluable. By responding directly and effectively to the concerns raised by our community, the partnership is actively fostering a safer environment for everyone.
