Resident of Park View Care Home receives a letter from Buckingham Palace

Posted on May 10, 2026 by Sam Sherman

One of the residents of Park View Care Home in Ipswich has received a personal reply from the Royal Household, sent on behalf of His Majesty The King, in response to a poem she wrote almost a quarter of a century ago in tribute to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

The poem, written on 2nd April 2002 by the resident, known as Mrs A.G., now in her nineties, had been quietly treasured for over twenty years before a member of the Park View team decided it deserved to be seen by someone rather important. They sent it to Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace wrote back.

The letter from Buckingham Palace

Sent by the Head of Royal Correspondence on behalf of His Majesty, the letter reads:

“The King has asked me to thank you for your thoughtful letter, in which you so kindly enclosed a poem by Mrs A.G., a resident at Park View Care Home. His Majesty greatly appreciates that you should have taken the trouble to write to him as you did. I can tell you that The King was immensely touched by your poignant verse, in tribute to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, and His Majesty was heartened to learn of her long-standing affection for The Royal Family.”

We’re very proud of our resident, she a poet at heart and a very gifted writer.

THE QUEEN MOTHER

Let the death bells toll

A lament, the piper play

A grand old lady

The Queen Mother,

Has sadly passed away.

A bright indomitable spirit

Lived a life so full of zest

But at last flame Has burnt out.

Her spirit at rest.

One who never shirked her duty

However hard the call

It was faced with quiet courage

An example to us all.

As now the nation mourn her

With one voice the people speak

Farewell to a special lady

Who simply was unique
