There is some brilliant news for Ipswich town centre! A major scheme to transform and enhance Lloyds Avenue is officially one step closer to becoming a reality, promising a much more welcoming and attractive public space for everyone in our community.
What’s Changing on Lloyds Avenue?
If you regularly walk between the Cornhill and Crown Street, you will know just how important this north-south route is. The upcoming project is designed to prioritise people, creating a vibrant environment that encourages us to spend more time enjoying the heart of our town. It will follow in the footsteps of the incredibly successful, pedestrian-friendly improvements we’ve already seen along St Peter’s Street.
The transformation includes expanded pedestrian areas and beautiful, high-quality paving across both the footways and carriageways. It’s not just about looking good, either; the plans feature accessible seating, new planters for a greener feel, and brand-new cycle parking facilities. The scheme will also declutter Lloyds Archway and strengthen the pedestrian links with Tower Ramparts and the Plaza area.
For those who rely on taxis, there is no need to worry. A taxi rank will be retained at the top of Lloyds Avenue, ensuring convenient access for customers while still freeing up additional space further down for public enjoyment and accessibility.
Timeline for the Transformation
The initial green light for the highways work was approved by Suffolk County Council in July 2026. Ipswich Borough Council originally secured planning permission back in April 2025 and has appointed the excellent local contractor, Brooks and Wood Ltd, to deliver the works.
Subject to the formal highway agreement being signed off, construction is scheduled to begin in the latter part of this year (2026). The grand unveiling of the completed scheme is expected by mid-July 2027, just in time for the summer sunshine!
A Thriving Town Centre for Ipswich

By investing in high-quality public spaces and greener environments, we are helping to ensure Ipswich continues to thrive as a modern, welcoming town.

This fantastic scheme forms part of an ongoing programme of investment into Ipswich town centre. By creating spaces that are safer, greener, and much more attractive, we are helping to support local economic growth whilst making Ipswich a truly wonderful place to live, work, and visit.
