£1.92m Funding to Transform The Baths into a Creative Powerhouse for Ipswich

Exciting news for Ipswich as The Baths on Civic Drive is set to undergo a remarkable transformation, thanks to a £1.92 million funding boost from the Towns Fund, awarded by Ipswich Borough Council. Brighten The Corners, a not-for-profit youth-focused live music organisation, will spearhead the revitalisation of this iconic building, continuing its rich history and creating fresh opportunities for the local creative community.

Once the site of St Matthew’s swimming baths and a social club, gym, and pop-up music venue, The Baths will soon reopen its doors as a cutting-edge Creative Digital Skills Lab alongside an upgraded music venue. The refurbishment project aims to breathe new life into this treasured Ipswich landmark, fostering creative talent and elevating Ipswich’s cultural and economic offerings.

Creative Digital Skills Lab to Inspire and Equip Local Talent

The unused first-floor space of The Baths is being transformed into a state-of-the-art Creative Digital Skills Lab, featuring video production, live recording, and podcast facilities. With an anticipated launch in 2027, the Lab will provide local businesses, creative entrepreneurs, and community groups easy access to an array of workshops, training courses, and business development support. These will cover valuable skills such as XR design, filmmaking, audio recording, journalism, post-production, and digital photography.

Notably, the Lab will include a distinctive Extended Reality (XR) studio, offering hands-on experience with immersive digital technologies including virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. With only one other public XR studio of this kind in the UK, Ipswich is poised to become a hub for innovation and creativity, offering young people and industry professionals rare access to cutting-edge technology.

Boosting Ipswich’s Night-Time Economy and Live Music Scene

The ground-floor music venue at The Baths will also see significant upgrades, providing an enhanced platform for both local and touring artists. This renewal is expected to contribute positively to Ipswich’s night-time economy by attracting more visitors and increasing footfall in the town centre. The revival of The Baths as a cultural venue promises a diverse and vibrant live music scene for Ipswich.

Community Engagement and Economic Growth

The project will bring new full-time jobs and freelance opportunities while encouraging young people, many commuting via public transport hubs like Old Cattle Market Bus Station and Tower Hall, to engage with the town centre. Brighten The Corners plans to hold community drop-in events in early 2026 to showcase their vision and gather input from local people, ensuring the new facilities serve the community well.
