Ipswich Tourist Guides Love Ipswich!

Posted on July 22, 2024 by Sam Sherman

Did you know there have been regular guided walks of Ipswich every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon through the summer months for over 40 years?!

Back in the 1980’s the local tourist board persuaded some enthusiastic local historians to undertake the study and training needed to qualify as registered tourist guides. Since then much has changed but Ipswich Tourist Guides Association (ITGA) is still going strong. This small group of trained, knowledgeable locals are keen to explain and promote the wonderful heritage and history of the town and tell the stories of remarkable Ipswich people associated with some of the buildings.

Over the years we’ve hosted visitors from all over the world – including “Ipswich” residents from Australia and America– as well as tourists arriving from other parts of the UK. Walks are popular with locals too either individually or with friends. Group walks for coach parties, work colleagues and social clubs are available by arrangement at any time.  Everyone is welcome.

So, if you’re new to Ipswich or visiting from further afield why not join one of the regular guided walks available every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from the beginning of May until the end of September each year?  There’s  a range of topics still to be explored this year, everything  from sacred spaces, trade and industry and Thomas Gainsborough  to Saxons, Vikings, Normans!

Perhaps  Myths, Mystery and Murder  on Tuesday 30th July will arouse your curiosity.  The walk will explore parts of the town connected with some Ipswich legends & mysteries – what is the connection between a massive and mysterious marble memorial slab (pic) and the builder of the Mansion? Was that building formerly a station on the Ipswich Underground? Who murdered this man (pic) whose impressive monument  stands in an Ipswich churchyard?

Places can be booked at the Ipswich Institute, either in person or using the Guides section hosted on the Institute’s website https://ipswichinstitute.org.uk/ipswichtourist/

The cost is just £5 per person and all are welcome.
