Ipswich steps up its UK City of Culture 2029 bid

Posted on June 18, 2026 by Sam Sherman

Ipswich steps up its UK City of Culture 2029 bid — and the town is invited to help shape the next chapter.

Ipswich has taken a bold step forward in its journey to become UK City of Culture 2029, uniting partners from across the town to shape the creative vision that will define the next stage of the bid.

A major stakeholder gathering at the Ipswich Regent Theatre on Wednesday 17 June brought together invited cultural leaders, businesses, educators and community organisations to explore how Ipswich can deliver a year of unforgettable cultural experiences.

The event focussed on how existing organisations, partnerships and businesses can work together to deliver a unique programme of unsurpassed events.  Further public engagement events will follow, giving residents across Ipswich the chance to contribute ideas, stories and ambitions for the town’s cultural future.

Following Ipswich’s success in reaching the long list — one of just nine places selected nationally — the bid team has received updated guidance from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Ipswich Borough Council, taking the lead, is now working with partners to develop the full application, due Monday 10 August.

To lead this next phase, Amy Vaughan has been appointed Bid Director. With over 25 years of cultural leadership experience — including roles at The Junction in Cambridge, Battersea Arts Centre and Arts Council England — Amy brings deep regional knowledge and national expertise. Amy has already been leading the work to create a 10 year Cultural Strategy for Ipswich.

Amy will be supported by a specialist team covering bid writing, cultural programming, data analysis and strategic development.  She said:

“The job now is to turn the energy and ideas behind our successful long listing into a clear, compelling vision for what a year of culture could do for Ipswich.”

Councillor Neil MacDonald, Leader of Ipswich Borough Council, added:

“This bid is about far more than a title or a single year; it is about unlocking long term opportunities for our communities, supporting our economy, and showcasing Ipswich’s ambition, talent and identity on a national stage.”

Ipswich.love: A message of encouragement

The Ipswich.love team is proud to stand alongside the bid partners at this pivotal moment. Our town has always been rich in creativity, community spirit and quiet brilliance — and this bid gives us the chance to show the world what Ipswich can do when it believes in itself.

We see the passion in our neighbourhoods every day. We see the talent in our artists, makers, young people and cultural organisations. And we believe — wholeheartedly — that Ipswich deserves this spotlight.

This is our moment to step forward together.

A call to the people of Ipswich

The bid team, Ipswich Borough Council and Ipswich.love are inviting everyone across the town to play a part in shaping the vision for 2029. Whether you’re an artist, a business owner, a community organiser, a student, or simply someone who loves this town, your voice matters.
You can support the bid by:

• Sharing your ideas for what a year of culture in Ipswich should look like
• Encouraging your organisation, school or community group to get involved
• Spreading the word and building pride in Ipswich’s cultural future
• Attending upcoming engagement events
• Championing Ipswich on social media using #Ipswich2029
• Sending ideas by email to info@ipswich2029.com

This is more than a competition — it’s a chance to imagine the Ipswich we want to become.

A national stage awaits

Ipswich now stands alongside Blackpool, Inverness and the Highlands, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swindon and Wrexham on the long list. A shortlist is expected in the autumn, with the winner announced around the turn of the year. The successful place will receive £10 million to deliver a transformative year of cultural activity in 2029.
