Enhancing St. Nicholas Street: Part of the Greener Ipswich Vision

Here at Ipswich.love, we’re always excited to share news that helps our town thrive. This week, we’ve received an update from the Ipswich Borough Council regarding the ongoing improvement works in St. Nicholas Street. These works are a vital component of the wider ‘Greener Ipswich Project’, aiming to cultivate a cleaner, safer, and more inviting town centre for everyone who lives, works, and visits here. It’s all about enhancing our pedestrian areas, encouraging more footfall, and supporting a truly sustainable heart for Ipswich.

The entire project is being rolled out in carefully planned phases, starting from the Cornhill end of Princes Street, progressing into parts of Queen Street, then moving to St. Nicholas Street, and concluding with works around Wolsey Square. This comprehensive approach, spanning approximately 26 weeks in total, promises a refreshed and vibrant Ipswich town centre.

What to Expect in St. Nicholas Street

The specific works for St. Nicholas Street are scheduled to commence on 27th April 2026 and will last for five weeks, concluding on 25th May 2026. To minimise disruption, the works will be phased, involving the temporary fencing off of one side of the one-way street. There will also be a short period of further road changes as the paving is replaced. We understand that construction can sometimes be a little inconvenient, and the contractor will have dedicated staff on hand to assist with any delivery arrangements for local businesses.

So, what exciting improvements are coming to St. Nicholas Street? You can look forward to:

  • Improved drainage provisions for new planters.
  • Upgraded paving for a smoother and more attractive surface.
  • Installation of raised steel-edged rain-garden planters, bringing more greenery to the street.
  • Beautiful herbaceous planting to enhance the aesthetic appeal.
  • Three brand-new, bespoke, high-quality benches, offering comfortable spots to rest and enjoy the surroundings.

We’re pleased to hear that a local contractor, Brooks and Wood Limited, has been appointed by the Ipswich Borough Council to carry out these works. They will have staff available to address any day-to-day queries from businesses, particularly regarding special delivery needs.

Businesses Remain Open!

Crucially, all businesses along St. Nicholas Street will remain open throughout the construction period. This means you can continue to support our fantastic local shops and services, even while these positive changes are being made. The council spokesperson expressed their appreciation: “We appreciate that construction works can be disruptive, and we thank everyone for their patience and cooperation while these improvements are carried out.”

Traffic Management During Works

While pedestrian and cycle access to all frontages will be maintained, there will be some temporary traffic management measures in place to ensure safety and facilitate the work. Vehicular access will be restricted to commercial vehicles for loading purposes only during the following times:

  • Mondays: Before 10:30am or after 4:30pm
  • Wednesdays: After 4:30pm
  • Thursdays: Before 10:30am
  • Sundays: After 4:30pm

The contractor’s working hours will be from 8:00am to 6:00pm, with work areas clearly fenced off from pedestrians and traffic. Escape routes from properties will also be maintained at all times. This thoughtful planning aims to keep disruption to a minimum while these important improvements take shape.

These enhancements will undoubtedly add to the charm and appeal of areas like The Saints, making Ipswich an even better place to live, work, and explore. Let’s embrace these positive changes together!
