Suffolk Show organisers have launched a new feature this year – ‘100 things to do for free’, inspiring us to enjoy a great value day out at the county’s biggest annual event.
The show is open on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 May, as usual with a huge range of displays, attractions and have-a-go activities.
Suffolk Show Director, John Taylor, explains: “We know families are looking at their budget when they’re planning activities this May half-term, which is why the Suffolk Show has a huge focus on offering great value for money.
“Under 15s gain free entry and there’s no limit on the number of children per adult, which is an initiative we’re proud to continue once again this year. Our gates open at 7am and the action starts straight away, so we recommend getting there early to make the most of a full day out.”
The ‘100 things to do for free’ list includes high-energy activities across the Showground – from climbing onboard a Suffolk Fire and Rescue fire engine or RNLI lifeboat in the Emergency Services Zone, to playing American football or trying the mini assault course in the Sports Village, sponsored by First Bus. In the popular Farm Discovery Zone, sponsored by Wild Aldhurst, Sizewell C, children can pet the sheep, ponies and goats, drive a mini digger, and have a go in a tractor simulator.
For a moment of calm, head to the Wildlife Zone for pond dipping or make your own bug hotel, and explore the mini gardens designed by Suffolk primary schools in the Glasswells Flower and Garden Experience.
Families are welcome to bring their own picnic to enjoy in several of the Show’s catering areas, including Adnams Beach Eats with beach huts by the sand, or under the canopy shade at the Suffolk Ram Catering Area. Children can also join a cookery workshop learning to make a savoury bake or try your hand at making sausages in the Farm Discovery Zone.
Farming and animals are always a prominent feature at the Show, with opportunities for visitors to get close to the animals and learn more about the county’s farming roots. Children can watch young handlers show their livestock in the Benacre Estate Bucklesham Ring, watch the hilarious Sheep Show to learn about sheep shearing, or see a champion cow having a blow-dry, ready for showtime, in the Benacre Estate Cattle Building.
The Suffolk Show has 12 competition rings, each with a packed schedule of entertainment throughout the two days. Watch thrill-seeking displays like the BMX Show in the President’s Ring and Squibb Freestyle Motorcross in the Collins Grand Ring, while the RAF Falcons Parachute Display Team and the Red Devils Army Parachute Display Team expect to be dropping in to wow the crowds once again on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Family favourites like the Mascot Derby, Police Dog display, Shetland Pony Grand National, and equestrian showjumping are also scheduled throughout the Show.
