Exciting New Play Area Development Starts at Murray Road Recreation Ground

We are delighted to share some fantastic news for families and children across Ipswich! Work has officially begun on a brand-new children’s play area at Murray Road Recreation Ground as of Monday 19 January 2026. This ambitious project is part of Ipswich Borough Council’s £3.5 million play area strategy to enhance outdoor play facilities throughout the town.

The new play area is set to be a big hit with youngsters aged from one to 14 years old. With 29 pieces of play equipment to enjoy, the space promises plenty of fun, imagination, and adventure opportunities. A special highlight is a unique Suffolk Punch horse installation, which proudly acknowledges the local history of the site. Did you know that Murray Road was once a horse racing course? This horse-themed play equipment allows children to learn about Ipswich’s heritage while reenacting exciting horse races from the past.

In keeping with Ipswich’s commitment to inclusion, the play area will feature equipment accessible to everyone. This includes a wheelchair-accessible carousel, braille alphabet and number play panels, and sign language learning features. Moreover, a dedicated communication panel designed specifically for children facing communication challenges will let them express themselves creatively by pointing to symbols.

During the construction, the current play area at Murray Road will be closed for safety reasons. However, the new facilities are expected to open in Spring 2026, offering a fresh space for fun and growth.

For families interested in exploring more play and community spaces around Ipswich, the Murrayside Community Centre nearby offers a variety of child-friendly activities and groups. Also worth a visit is Friends of Christchurch Park, a community group dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the town’s beautiful parks.

We encourage everyone to keep an eye on this project to see the transformation come to life and join in the excitement when the new play area officially opens. This space will not only provide a place for children to play but will also contribute to strengthening our community ties through shared outdoor experiences.
