2025 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Antonio Machado, and August the 89th anniversary of the assassination of Federico Garcia Lorca. In this workshop we will consider these two great Spanish poets of the twentieth century. Both born in Andalusia but of very different temperaments, and both, in different ways, victims of the Spanish Civil War. We will sketch in some biographical and cultural context before concentrating on a reading of one poem for each – Lorca’s “Romance de la Guardia Civil Española” (1927) and Machado’s “A Orillas del Duero” (On the banks of the Duero – 1909). Lorca’s poem is full of Andalusian drama and duende. Machado’s more sober gaze turns to a very different landscape – the harsh and depopulated uplands of Old Castile. We shall also explore some links between the two poets’ lives.
Although some knowledge of the Spanish language may add to your day (we will listen to versions in the original Spanish) no proficiency in Spanish is required as we will principally study English translations. All texts will be provided on the day.
