Ipswich is a great place to explore on foot, with the River Orwell and River Gipping providing a scenic backdrop to the town and a surprising amount of green space to discover. Walks around Ipswich take you from the historic waterfront and marina into parks, woodland, nature reserves and open countryside, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy riverside views and wildlife. Here are four great walks in and around Ipswich.

Ipswich Waterfront Walk

The Ipswich Waterfront Walk is a 5.2-mile route combining the historic heart of the town with some surprisingly wild riverside scenery. The walk passes through Holywells Park and the historic Ipswich Waterfront before continuing towards Orwell Country Park and Pipers Vale. Along the River Orwell there are excellent views of the water and the impressive Orwell Bridge, while the waterfront itself provides plenty of opportunities for a meal or drink along the way.

Orwell Country Park Walk

The 4-mile Orwell Country Park walk is ideal if you’re looking for a shorter route with plenty of scenery. The park covers more than 200 acres and has a mixture of woodland trails, open parkland and riverside paths with some excellent views across the River Orwell. There’s also a good chance of seeing wildlife along the way, while the nearby pubs and cafes provide options for refreshments after your walk. See More >>

Ipswich Circular River Walk

This 8.1-mile circular walk gives you a great introduction to Ipswich and its surrounding countryside. Starting at Stoke Bridge, where the River Gipping becomes the River Orwell, the route follows the waterfront before continuing through Holywells Park and Landseer Park to Orwell Country Park. You then cross the Orwell Bridge and return along the western side of the river, taking in marinas, riverside paths and some lovely views along the way.

Stour and Orwell Walk

For something much longer, the 41-mile Stour and Orwell Walk explores two of Suffolk’s most beautiful rivers. The route passes through the Suffolk Coast and Heaths, following the Orwell from Felixstowe towards Ipswich before continuing south towards Shotley Gate and then along the River Stour to Cattawade. There are some particularly attractive sections around Orwell Country Park, Nacton Shores and Trimley Marshes, as well as the lovely riverside hamlet of Pin Mill. See more >>
