Information - Following the Fish

Suffolk Archives have been working on an exciting project with High Life Highland’s Archive, Norfolk Record Office, and Tasglann nan Eilean (the Hebridean Archives) to develop a new touring exhibition, funded by the Lloyds Register Foundation.

Following the Fish explores the unsung stories of the herring girls who travelled hundreds of miles from Scotland to Suffolk and Norfolk, following the herring fishing fleets. The herring girls established a strong community of women undertaking back breaking work gutting and barrelling the catch.

An often-overlooked part of our maritime history, these women played a huge role in both the economy and community of fishing towns in Scotland and East Anglia.

Following the Fish celebrates their work and brings their stories to life.

Please join us for the English launch of the pop-up exhibition, which will be touring locations across Suffolk and Norfolk this summer.

We will also be welcoming the Suffolk Archives volunteers who conducted research on this project,  Jan Whitehead, Gansey knitting expert and a Sea Shanty performance.   Refreshments and nibbles will be provided.

Please RSVP to grace.watson@suffolk.gov.uk to secure your free place

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
