Information - 3D Sculpture – Stone Carving 2 day workshop with Antonia Hockton

For over 30 years, Antonia has specialised in stone. Her own fine art carvings are in collections around the country. Plus, as a trained conservator, she has restored ancient sculpture for the Oxford University, The Victoria and Albert Museum and The Church or England.

Over the weekend Antonia will teach you to carve a piece of English Alabaster. You will choose one of two designs, a wild boar or a polar bear. We will start off with a quick clay maquette to help visualise the 3-dimentional shape. Then each person will have a small block of alabaster and a template. Using hand tools, that will be provided, by a process of reduction, the waste stone is worked away to reveal the sculpture within.

The finished carving will be sanded to a smooth and polished finish. You can sign it with your own ‘banker mark’ ( a stone carvers’ signature)

This workshop is limited to 6 places so you get the most from your weekend. All materials, lunch each day and refreshments are provided. Additional pieces of stone can be purchased from Antonia should you want to make a second sculpture.

Stone carving requires a good hand grip, so this workshop might not be suitable for those suffering from arthritis or mobility issues.
