There is exciting news for Ipswich families this summer! Work is about to begin on a brand-new, nature-themed children’s play area at Ellenbrook Park. Coming as part of a significant ongoing investment by Ipswich Borough Council, the playground promises to be a fantastic addition to our local community.
Fittingly announced during Love Parks Week—a national campaign celebrating the wonderful green spaces on our doorsteps—this upgrade is all about bringing families together and getting more kids enjoying the great outdoors.
A Bug’s Life: What to Expect
Aimed at children aged between two and 10 years old, the new play area will feature a fun and engaging bug and nature theme. It is designed to spark imaginations, allowing young people to explore, create their own stories, and enjoy active outdoor play.
With eight new pieces of play equipment, kids will be able to slide into the pond, spin with the bumblebees, and “catch the worm” through a brilliant range of interactive and sensory features.
Inclusive Play for Everyone
Here at Ipswich.love, we believe that every child should have the chance to play safely and happily, which is why we are thrilled that this new design has a strong focus on accessibility and inclusion. The park will include:
- A wheelchair-accessible carousel
- An inclusive seesaw
- Sensory bongos
- A variety of swings suitable for different needs
Councillor Stefan Long, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport, shared his enthusiasm for the project:
“We’re delighted to be bringing another exciting new play area to Ipswich as part of our continued investment in high-quality play spaces for children and families. The Ellenbrook Park design has been inspired by bugs, nature and imaginative play, creating a unique environment where children can explore, learn and have fun together.
“It is particularly pleasing to see so many inclusive features incorporated throughout the design, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to play, socialise and enjoy the outdoors in a welcoming environment.”
When Does Work Start?
Construction on the new playground is set to begin on Monday, 17 August. Please note that whilst the new equipment is being installed, the current play area will be closed to keep everyone safe.
This work is part of an overarching £3.5 million Play Area Strategy that is delivering incredible improvements to facilities across our borough—complementing our other brilliant green spaces such as Holywells Park and Chantry Park. We can’t wait to see the new Ellenbrook Park play area open its gates later this year, bringing even more joy, laughter, and community spirit to Ipswich!
