New Ipswich Mural Celebrates Unity, Roots, and New Beginnings

Exciting news for Ipswich as a vibrant new mural is set to enhance the community spirit right in the heart of the town. The collaborative project, brought together by Art Eat Events and Ipswich Community Media (ICM), has received generous backing from The National Lottery Community Fund. This large-scale public mural will be unveiled at Westgate House, the freshly revitalised community building in central Ipswich.

This artwork is truly a community effort, reflecting the diverse stories and journeys of those who now call Ipswich home. Over 30 participants from around the world, including refugees, ESOL learners, and young people involved with ICM’s Integration team and the South Street Kids youth project, have collaborated closely with internationally renowned mural artist Atma. The mural features imagery of hands offering a bouquet, patterns, and bursts of colour, symbolising diversity, generosity, unity, and hope.

As Iona from Art Eat Events explains, “This project is about growing roots together. In a time when divisive narratives about migration are all too common, this mural acts as a joyful counter-story, celebrating community, creativity, and the beauty of difference.” The project is a beacon of positivity in Ipswich, bringing together people from many backgrounds to create something meaningful for the town.

The mural’s painting is scheduled for late November, coinciding with the launch of Roots, a new community café opening on the ground floor of Westgate House. Roots aims to connect people through shared food, art, and culture, furthering the spirit of togetherness embodied by the mural.

Nikki Packham from ICM emphasises, “It’s about giving everyone a voice, especially those who are too often unheard, and transforming those voices into something permanent and positive in our town.”

The mural project is also supported by local businesses showing the strength of Ipswich’s community spirit. For example, Novotel Ipswich has kindly provided accommodation support for the visiting artist Atma, while Johnstone’s Paint has contributed materials and specialist paints at discounted rates. These partnerships showcase how Ipswich’s creativity and kindness combine to make lasting, visible change.

This mural will stand not only as an artistic landmark but also as a powerful symbol of Ipswich’s ongoing story of inclusion, resilience, and community strength. When communities create together, they flourish together.
