For the Love of Rediscovering the Treasure Trove of Ipswich: How the New Wolsey Theatre Brought Me Back Home - Ipswich.love

Dear Ipswich, I hope you are having a great day.

Ipswich has always had a way of popping up in my life. Growing up in Colchester, I often found myself hopping on the train to Ipswich, lured by its quirky indie cinema and the unforgettable shows at what was then the Wolsey Theatre. Those early trips sparked my lifelong love affair with the arts and left a lasting mark on my soul.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and I found myself heading back to the area—but this time, I didn’t stop in Colchester. Ipswich had its hooks in me again, thanks to the New Wolsey Theatre. It felt like coming home. The New Wolsey isn’t just my favourite theatre in the country; it’s a creative powerhouse that really knows how to connect with its audience. That magnetic pull was irresistible, and before I knew it, I was back in Ipswich for good.

What started as a return for the theatre soon turned into something so much more. I ended up buying my first home right in the heart of town on Museum Street, eager to dive headfirst into everything Ipswich has to offer. And let me tell you, this town is bursting with life, culture, and a proper sense of community.

Living here is like being in the middle of a treasure trove. Everything’s within a stone’s throw—whether it’s grabbing fresh produce and amazing bread from the world food store on Berners Street, or catching a gig at The Baths or The Smokehouse. My days sometimes start with breakfast at Isaacs, and dinners at Takayama or drinks at The Arcade Tavern are always a treat.

Exploring Ipswich has been a blast. Whether I’m hunting for quirky gifts at Love One, digging through vinyl at Out of Time Records, or having a cheeky night out at the Spread Eagle, there’s always something new to discover. A fresh trim at Shadow Gallery Barbers, a tune-up at Elmy Cycles, or a bike ride out to Felixstowe for a dip—there’s never a dull moment. And when I need a breather, a pint by the Orwell at Pin Mill or a peaceful Sunday walk to Woodbridge does the trick.

But what really sets Ipswich apart is its people. There’s a buzzing energy here—a real passion for the town and for making it a great place everyone. The cultural scene is so vibrant, it could make any other town in East Anglia green with envy. I’ve even become a member of that beloved indie cinema, which is now just minutes from my doorstep.

The New Wolsey Theatre may have brought me back, but it’s Ipswich that’s captured my heart. With its stunning architecture, lively cultural scene, and warm community, Ipswich isn’t just a place to live—it’s a place to thrive. And for that, I’m absolutely chuffed.
