Four of Ipswich’s Favourite Parks Celebrate Green Flag Success

Four of our wonderful local parks have been awarded the coveted Green Flag Award, officially recognising them as some of the very best green spaces in the country.

If you’ve taken a stroll, walked the dog, or enjoyed a family picnic recently, you’ll know just how lucky we are to have such beautiful outdoor areas on our doorstep. This year, Bourne Park, Christchurch Park, and Holywells Park have all proudly retained their prestigious status. What’s even more exciting is that Chantry Park has been awarded the Green Flag for the very first time! This means that all of our town’s heritage parks now hold this fantastic international quality mark.

Why Green Spaces Matter to Our Community

The Green Flag Award, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Out of a record-breaking 2,391 UK parks to achieve the award recently, our four local favourites stood out. This is a huge testament to the hard work, passion, and dedication of the people who look after our local green spaces, ensuring they are maintained to incredibly high standards.

Local parks are much more than just a place to catch some fresh air. They are essential public spaces that support our mental and physical well-being, bring neighbourhoods together, provide a haven for local wildlife, and even help boost our local economy. Having access to safe, welcoming, and well-managed nature spots is a preventative, practical way to improve everyone’s quality of life.

Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, praised the efforts locally, saying: “Ipswich Borough Council have shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed. As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.”

A Massive Thank You to the Teams and Volunteers

This achievement wouldn’t be possible without the continued dedication of the parks teams, local volunteers, and community groups who work tirelessly in all weathers to care for these valued environments.

Councillor Stefan Long, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport at Ipswich Borough Council, shared his pride in the achievement: “Our parks are at the heart of communities across Ipswich, providing places for recreation, exercise, wildlife, and relaxation. Receiving this recognition demonstrates our ongoing commitment to maintaining high-quality, welcoming, and sustainable green spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy now and in the future.”

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful spot to read a book, a playground to tire out the little ones, or a scenic route for your weekend run, our award-winning parks are right here waiting for you. Why not pack a flask of tea, gather your friends or family, and experience our Green Flag spaces for yourself this weekend?
