Ipswich is getting its first international film festival. The Ipswich International Film Festival (IIFF) runs for two weeks, from Saturday 31 October to Saturday 14 November, and it’s based at King Street Cinema. Organisers expect it to become a yearly event, so this opening edition could be the start of a new tradition in the town centre.
What’s on the programme
The festival promises a varied programme of contemporary international cinema, landmark restorations, cult classics, documentaries and live events. If you like to see a film before everyone else, there will be previews of unreleased movies. There will also be workshops, talks and awards.
Film fans should note the special viewings of classic films on 35mm film. The organisers describe the restorations as “masterful”, so it’s a chance to see older titles presented with care.
The press release doesn’t list individual films, times or ticket prices. Keep an eye on the festival’s announcements for the full line-up.
Offers for ticket holders
Local businesses are getting behind the festival too. Shops, cafés and other businesses across the town will be supporting the IIFF with offers and discounts for ticket holders. Full details will be uploaded to the All About Ipswich website. If you have a ticket, check there before you head out. A film night could easily turn into a meal or a bit of shopping in town.
Backing from Ipswich Central
Ipswich Central is sponsoring the festival, and its team says it is looking forward to attending some of the events that have been lined up. Chief executive Lee Walker said:
“Ipswich Central is incredibly proud to be supporting the first Ipswich International Film Festival hosted at King Street Cinema.”
He also linked the festival to a wider ambition. Over the summer, local businesses backed Ipswich Central’s manifesto, which set an ambitious target for Ipswich to be recognised for its diverse range of festivals and celebrations. Lee said Ipswich Central hopes the IIFF will become a milestone event in the town’s calendar.
Why it matters
A festival like this gives people in Ipswich a reason to get out to the cinema, try something they might not normally watch, and spend an evening in the town centre. If the festival does become annual, it could also draw visitors from further afield. For local film lovers, it means a chance to see international and classic cinema close to home.
The festival runs from Saturday 31 October to Saturday 14 November at King Street Cinema in Ipswich. Look out for the business offers and discounts for ticket holders on the All About Ipswich website. For more about the venue, visit the King Street Cinema page in the ipswich.love directory.
