Information - Ipswich Rivers

The second of this year’s Winter Talk series by the Ipswich Society is  by John Warren

The fortunes of Ipswich have in the past, at the present and will be in the future defined by the river. Names of the river vary on old maps; the Orwell is now the common term for the salt estuary and the Gipping the fresh water above the Handford lock. This talk examines the economic power of trade as the lowest road crossing point meeting the highest point of navigation moved from the Roman fort at Baylham down to Stoke Bridge/St Peters Dock in Anglo-Saxon times. This port thrived through the Viking and Medieval periods, hit tough times after the English Civil War and boomed under the Victorians. Now the impact of Free Port East and containerisation requires a redefinition of Ipswich and its relationship with the river.

Come along for an informative evening!
