Information - Talk: Art Gossip and Sketching – Ipswich Art in the Borough Collection

A fascinating overview of the art and artists who have come to make up the Ipswich Borough art collection, from John Moore’s scenes of Ipswich docks to Anna Airy’s portrait paintings.

The history of the Ipswich Fine Art Club (now renamed Ipswich Art Society) and development of the Ipswich Borough art collection are inextricably intertwined. In 1874 the artist John Duvall, industrialist Edward Packard and head of the art school William Griffiths were among the founding members and all are represented in the collection. This is a chance to find out more about the artists and artworks that form a fundamental part of Ipswich’s cultural history.

Emma Roodhouse is an art curator and researcher. She has been working in the museum and gallery sector for over twenty years and has an in-depth knowledge of Suffolk artists from her time at Colchester & Ipswich Museums. Curating a wide range of exhibitions including A Year of Constable 2015; Kiss and Tell: Rodin and Suffolk Sculpture ; Once Upon a Time children’s book illustrations and Women 100. She has been the recipient of awards for curatorial scholarship, to study Constable, at the Yale Centre for British Art and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art funded her research into early Constable. This resulted in the exhibition Creating Constable and the first publication for Ipswich on the Constable collection.
