Information - Suffolk Pride Fringe Festival: Shuff & Byng

Slaget Theatre and Matthew Linley Productions

Shuff & Byng is an exploration of the lives, work, and enduring legacy of Douglas Byng and Mrs. Shufflewick – two iconic figures who pioneered the art of female impersonation long before the era of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Douglas “bawdy but British” Byng was the UK’s notorious king of double entendre, enjoying a 70-year career as a cross-dressing society entertainer, gracing film, stage, variety, and cabaret. His friends, lovers, and acquaintances spanned royalty, aristocracy, and celebrities, and his work led to both BBC acclaim and being unceremoniously banned

In contrast, Mrs. Shufflewick, a working class char lady and semi-resident of her local pub, The Cock and Bull, was the glorious creation of Rex Jameson. With his impeccable timing Jameson brought Mrs. Shufflewick to life, becoming one of variety, tv & radio’s most original and brilliant talents.

Theatre maker Tony Lidington of Promenade Promotions is developing and writing Shuff & Byng, promising a celebration of the unique genius of both Rex Jameson and Douglas Byng.

“A comic genius. Even in his cups Rex was gloriously funny.” – Roy Hudd on Mrs. Shufflewick

“A dazzling performer, a theatrical legend.” – The Times on Douglas Byng

This project is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Noel Coward Foundation and with public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The project has been supported by our partners Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre, Eastern Angles, the Electric Palace Harwich and Colchester Arts Centre.

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
