WINDRUSH 76 – Heritage & Legacy Festival Celebrates the 76th Anniversary of the Windrush Generation in Ipswich

Ipswich Windrush Society is thrilled to announce Windrush 76 – Heritage & Legacy Festival, returning for its second year to commemorate the 76th anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush Generation to the United Kingdom. The festival will take place on 22nd June 2024, at Murray Road Park from 11am to 4pm, with free entry for all.

Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, which saw over a thousand attendees, Windrush 76 – Heritage & Legacy Festival promises to be an even bigger celebration of the enduring legacy and cultural richness of the Windrush Generation. Attendees can look forward to a day filled with music, food, cultural workshops, and family-friendly activities.

“The overwhelming response to last year’s event underscored the importance of celebrating the contributions of the Windrush Generation,” said Max Thomas, Founder of Ipswich Windrush Society. “Windrush 76 will be a testament to the strength, resilience, and cultural richness of the Windrush community and we invite everyone to join us in this celebration of unity and diversity.”

The festival will commence with a spirited community parade starting at 11am from Landseer Park, symbolising the journey and resilience of the Windrush Generation. Throughout the day, attendees can immerse themselves in a range of activities including music, food, cultural workshops, and family-friendly activities. Stalls and exhibition spaces will showcase the rich heritage and contributions of the Windrush Generation, offering a platform for reflection and celebration.

As the day draws to a close, the festival will culminate with an Evening of Remembrance at the Murrayside Community Centre, providing a solemn yet uplifting space for attendees to pay tribute to the sacrifices and achievements of the Windrush Generation.

On June 22, 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex, carrying British Caribbeans who had come to help address Britain’s post-war labour shortage. Windrush 76 – Heritage & Legacy Festival commemorates this historic event, bringing together generations to celebrate and commemorate their enduring contributions.

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
