Information - Greenways Conservation work party – Thursday
The Greenways Countryside Project exists to protect and enhance the countryside, landscape and open space across an area of about 100 square kilometres in and around the town of Ipswich, and home to around one quarter of the population of Suffolk, for the benefit of wildlife and local people. The project relies on volunteers to complete much of its practical conservation work
The Greenways Project relies heavily on volunteers in carrying out most of its practical conservation tasks. Over the years we have developed a dedicated group of long term volunteers, including some who are: early retired; students; unemployed; building up experience for a career in conservation; or just have an interest in wildlife and conservation and a little free time available.
As well as our long-term regulars, over the years a large number of people have come along just for a few days and found out a little more about our conservation work around Ipswich whilst contributing to the tasks underway. We always welcome new long- or short-term volunteers, and although most of the work is practical in nature (and some of our regulars use the volunteer tasks as a means of keeping fit), you do not need any particular skills to join in. To get an idea of the range of tasks that we carry out, look through the rest of the pages on this site.Long term volunteers are treated in many ways as though they were employees and have access to training courses. We have, during the last couple of years, provided courses in chainsaw operation, first aid at work, wildlife identification, and hedge-laying to some of our volunteers. Volunteers also help us with a very wide range of other tasks from setting up and running events, to publicity, wildlife surveying and administration. Our regular volunteer day each week is Tuesday, but we also have smaller groups of volunteers on most Thursdays and Fridays.
Before volunteering with the Greenways Project, you must attend an induction/application interview which normally takes about an hour. This allows us to explain in more detail what you can expect and gives the opportunity to cover important health and safety issues before you start. Please contact us by email or phone to arrange an interview.
