Information - Exhibition: Behind Bars – Suffolk’s Criminal Past

24 October 2025 – 18 January 2026
Step into a life of crime with Behind Bars, a new exhibition exploring crime and punishment in Suffolk’s lawless past.

Unearth chilling stories of famous local crimes such as the Red Barn Murder, the Acton Dumpling Murderess, and the last public execution in Suffolk.

Explore what a crime is, from riots and protests to medical care and self-expression. Who is accused and why, and how do they get a fair trial?

Discover the fascinating story of Suffolk’s favorite heroine, Margaret Catchpole. The famous horse stealer who escaped Ipswich jail, went on the run, and was transported to Australia. On display in the UK for the first time, read Margaret’s personal letters written to her family and friends back home.

Understand how crime and punishment has changed over time, the role of the Police and our prison system, and how we are keeping Suffolk safe today.
