Information - Crinkle-crankle walls

Part of the Heritage Open Days week – a talk by architect Stuart Edgar – Architectural Oddities – crinkle-crankle walls.

Architectural Oddities: “Crinkle crankle walls” – with their undulating, serpentine curves, offer a striking example of how form and function blend in traditional English architecture.

This talk explores the origins, structural ingenuity, and conservation value of these distinctive wavy walls, often found in East Anglia.

The talk will explore their historical significance and show some local examples from 17th-century English estates to modern interpretations, and discuss best practices in their repair, preservation, and integration within contemporary heritage-led design.
