Information - BTCP: The Unthanks

Wrap up warm and join us for an incredibly special, magical evening this December! Ipswich’s very own live music champions, Brighten The Corners, are bringing the highly acclaimed, Mercury-nominated folk group The Unthanks to the stunning surroundings of The Church.

This is the perfect way to welcome the festive season. The Unthanks will be performing their beautiful show, In Winter, offering a gorgeous, bittersweet celebration of the coldest season. It’s a performance that captures both the cozy warmth of a fireside and the quiet, magical chill of the winter months, reflecting on the end of one year and the beginning of the next.

A Dream-Like Winter Fantasia

Described by The Times as “the gold standard” of winter records, this show is far from your average Christmas concert. In their signature style, The Unthanks have lovingly collected and reimagined seasonal music from all over the world, passing it through their unique musical filter.

During the evening, you can expect to hear:

  • A Tyneside band playing a German Christmas song in the style of The Beach Boys.
  • A Spanish carol performed with a gritty, Tom Waits-style atmosphere.
  • A French carol given a haunting desert-blues menace.
  • A moving, newly written tribute to the NHS set to the tune of O Holy Night.
  • Traditional wassails and old stories colored with folk noir and trace elements of Charlie Brown’s Christmas.

It is inventive, effortless, and utterly spellbinding music that will stay with you long after the final note fades.

What the Critics Say

The music press have fallen head-over-heels for this seasonal masterpiece:

  • “Truly beautiful music, full of winter chill and familial warmth.” – Buzz
  • “As breathtaking as freezing air.” – The Telegraph
  • “An absolute gem… one of the finest albums the Unthanks have given us yet.” – Narc

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
