Meet Mikey Kenney

Mikey Kenney is a rare gem in the world of traditional music. Known for his masterful fiddle playing, soulful singing, insightful songwriting, and unique composing skills, Mikey is also a talented multi-instrumentalist, often featuring banjo, mandolin, guitar, and melodeon in his recordings.

Based in Liverpool, Mikey is celebrated as an important figure in preserving and passing down English and Irish fiddle traditions, particularly in the Northwest. His past roles include musical director for the Lancashire Youth Folk Ensemble and Vice-Chair at Comhaltas Liverpool. Yet, he’s equally known for his innovative compositions that blend traditional roots with progressive influences.

A Musician of Both Tradition and Innovation

Mikey’s last two critically acclaimed releases, Counsel of Owls and The Reverie Road, received 5-star reviews from fRoots magazine. They reveal a musician dedicated to honoring the integrity of traditional fiddle music while fearlessly exploring genres like psychedelia, bluegrass, jazz, and Italian tarantella.

His upcoming album, Tiny Little Light, slated for release in September 2025, promises to be his finest work yet. This collection features songs built around original fiddle tunes that remain true to tradition but are progressive in arrangement and instrumentation. Mikey will celebrate this new material live in 2025, performing alongside special ensembles including Michael Paul Metcalfe (drums), Awen Blandford (cello), and Andy Raven (guitar).

Collaborator and Session Musician Extraordinaire

Aside from his solo work, Mikey is a sought-after collaborator and session musician. His fiddle playing and string arrangements have featured in projects with an impressive array of artists such as Vinicio Capossela, Alabaster dePlume, Katherine Priddy, Josephine Foster, Bex Burch, Band of Burns, Emily Portman, and many more.

Why You Should Come

“Mikey Kenney is a rare gem… there are few people who seem to embody traditional music in quite the same way. He’s like a walking tune book, and his dedication to keeping the old music of his native Lancashire alive is something to be cherished.” – Jon Wilks, TradFolk
