About Constant Smiles
Much like the night-blooming flora that inspired their album title, Moonflowers is the result of slow, largely unseen patterns of growth. Based in New York, Constant Smiles carved a unique path from an amorphous collection of highly conceptual ideas into something more accessible — a subtle masterpiece of internally-born ambient pop.
Formed in 2009 by Ben Jones, the band has gone through many iterations, ranging from noisy soundscapes and chamber pop to icy coldwave-adjacent synth-pop. Their work often focused on carefully designed, time-limited albums named after favorite film directors. After moving to New York and releasing a few records with Sacred Bones, the band gained wider recognition, yet their lineup and sound remained in flux for years.
The turning point came at the end of 2022 when Constant Smiles solidified into a permanent trio with the addition of drummer and vocalist Nora Knight alongside longtime bassist Spike Currier. This new lineup brought fresh emotional depth and clarity to their music. With Knight and Currier providing structure and harmony, Ben Jones’ ever-evolving creativity became more focused and direct, resulting in the dreamy yet accessible sound found on Moonflowers.
The album’s feel recalls the best moments of legendary artists like Talk Talk and Nick Drake, the delicate majesty of Adrianne Lenker’s work, and Jim O’Rourke’s chamber pop excursions. Moonflowers arrives naturally, almost subliminally, offering a clear view into a sound that previous releases only hinted at.
The Music & Atmosphere
Moonflowers captures songs about fleeting emotions — those feelings that arise before you even have time to think. The music is tender and cared for without ever feeling labored, creating an atmosphere of stillness with tiny moving parts beneath the surface. The compositions are nearly transparent but carry an emotional weight that feels as heavy as a mountain.
Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the band, this performance promises to be an intimate and evocative experience, perfectly suited to the warm and welcoming vibe of The Smokehouse.
