This September, the Ipswich music scene is gearing up for a monumental celebration as local institution The Smokehouse turns 10. To mark a decade of championing grassroots creatives, they’ve partnered with the University of Suffolk—who are also celebrating their own tenth anniversary as an independent university—for a month-long programme of unforgettable gigs, events, and community collaborations.
Operated by the dedicated team at Brighten The Corners, The Smokehouse first opened its doors at South Street Studios in 2016. Thanks to the hard work of CEO Joe Bailey, a Biffa Award grant, and matches from local councillors, it quickly became the beating heart of our town’s live music scene. Over the years, this much-loved venue has hosted around 850 gigs, provided a platform for over 2,500 bands and artists, and given countless young people the chance to gain hands-on experience in live events and music production.
Smokehouse 10: A Month of Grassroots Live Music
Throughout the month, you can expect a beautifully diverse run of shows spanning hip hop, alternative, emo, soul, and indie. It’s a brilliant opportunity to discover new music, support local promoters, and join in with a community that has fostered so much talent.
The anniversary line-up includes:
- Friday 4th September: JayaHadADream + Kelci + Gen We (Presented by Brighten The Corners)
- Saturday 12th September: Loome + I.Am.Afiya + Oscar November (Presented by Baker’s Dozen Radio Show)
- Friday 18th September: Doll Face + Milvain + Yarrow (Presented by Tune Up)
- Saturday 19th September: Return of the Boom Bap with Dylan Jay + Jimmy Green + JAL (Presented by Dylan Jay)
- Friday 25th September: Mountain Peaks + Midweek + Buggery Act (Presented by Offbeat Promotions)
- Saturday 26th September: Smokehouse 10 Birthday Party (Line Up TBA, presented by Brighten The Corners)
Celebrating a Decade of Creative Community
Joe Bailey, CEO of Brighten The Corners, shared his excitement for the upcoming events: “We’re really proud to be partnering with the University of Suffolk for our Smokehouse 10 birthday celebrations. Both organisations are forward-thinking and have a love for supporting communities and showing the best Ipswich has to offer.”
This civic pride is echoed by Professor Jenny Higham, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Suffolk, who noted the importance of a thriving cultural life in Ipswich for those who live, work, and study here. “We share a civic pride in our county town,” she said, highlighting the vital work of providing platforms for local, regional, and touring artists, alongside creating cultural opportunities for young people.
