New bug-themed inclusive play area opens at Ellenbrook Park

Posted on October 2, 2026 by Press Team

Families and young children in our local community have a wonderful new reason to head outdoors this week, as a brand-new play area is now officially open and ready to enjoy at Ellenbrook Park. Moving away from standard playground designs, this completely refreshed space has been built with a clear focus on the natural world. It is packed with a variety of bug and nature-inspired features that have been specifically chosen to encourage imaginative, active, and inclusive play for everyone who visits.

Thoughtful design for all abilities

When it comes to local parks, ensuring that facilities cater to a wide range of needs is incredibly important for the community. This new installation at Ellenbrook Park has been designed specifically for children aged between two and ten years old, making it an ideal spot for younger families. In total, the site now includes eight brand-new pieces of play equipment, all chosen with a strong emphasis on accessibility and inclusive play.

The goal is to provide a welcoming environment where children of different physical abilities can play happily alongside one another without barriers. To achieve this, the updated park features a wheelchair-accessible carousel, allowing children who use wheelchairs to join in the fun seamlessly with their friends and siblings. There is also an inclusive seesaw designed to accommodate different needs, alongside classic playground equipment like swings, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Beyond the physical movement of the carousel and swings, the play area also incorporates sensory musical elements. These thoughtful additions offer a completely different type of engagement, allowing children to explore sound and rhythm while they play. This variety ensures that the park caters to different play preferences and moods, whether a child wants to be highly active or enjoy a quieter, more sensory experience in the fresh air.

A major investment in local parks

The transformation at Ellenbrook Park is not an isolated project. It is actually one of a number of ongoing improvements currently being delivered through a major £3.5 million Play Area Strategy. Managed by Ipswich Borough Council, this extensive strategy is focused on investing in modern, high-quality play facilities right across the town. The overarching aim is to ensure that residents in all areas of Ipswich have access to enjoyable and engaging outdoor spaces.

To mark the completion of the project, Councillor Stefan Long, who serves as the Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sport, visited the new site alongside Councillor Stuart Allen and Councillor Jenny Smith. Seeing the bug and nature-themed equipment in place, Councillor Long expressed his enthusiasm for the positive impact it will have on local families.

“It’s fantastic to see this new play area open and ready to welcome local children and families. The equipment has been thoughtfully designed around a nature theme, bringing something a little different to Ellenbrook Park and encouraging children to use their imagination while staying active outdoors.”

Reflecting on the inclusive nature of the eight new pieces of equipment, he added:

“Accessibility has been a key consideration throughout the project, and we’re proud to have created a space where children can play happily alongside one another.”

These improvements demonstrate a clear commitment to maintaining parks as an important part of our communities, providing spaces that genuinely benefit the people who use them every day.

If you are looking for an engaging activity for your younger children, the new nature-themed play area at Ellenbrook Park is open now and ready to be explored. With equipment specifically suited for ages two to ten, including the wheelchair-accessible carousel, the inclusive seesaw, and the sensory musical features, it is a fantastic destination for an inclusive family outing. The park provides a highly accessible option for getting outdoors, staying active, and enjoying the fresh air in Ipswich, so grab your coats and head down to see the new bug-inspired features for yourself.
