Information - Tristan Burfield & Liza Read

MOTE – Museum of the Environment in Ipswich will host an evening of artist talks on Thursday 22 October, from 6pm to 8.30pm, bringing together artists Liza Read and Tristan Burfield to explore the intersections of technology, creativity and the environment.

As part of MOTE’s ongoing programme of exhibitions, talks and events, the evening will offer visitors the opportunity to discover the ideas and processes behind two distinctive creative practices.

Liza Read will present It’s a Hologram, Isn’t It?, a 40-minute presentation examining the historic and digital illusions commonly referred to as holograms. Challenging the way the term is used today, Read will explore the distinction between contemporary digital effects and the original analogue, three-dimensional laser-produced holograms, explaining how these scientific images are made.

Accompanied by a table display of props to illustrate the subject, the presentation will offer an accessible introduction to the science, history and misconceptions surrounding holographic imagery. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see and handle selected objects, including Limbo the Frog.

Alongside Read’s presentation, Tristan Burfield will explore the relationship between chiptune music and the environment, bringing together digital sound, technology and environmental themes.

The event reflects MOTE’s commitment to creating a space where art, science, history and environmental questions can meet, encouraging visitors to approach familiar subjects from new perspectives.

Based at 13 Museum Street, Ipswich, MOTE – Museum of the Environment combines exhibitions with a programme of artist talks, workshops and events designed to encourage conversation around the world we inhabit and the changes shaping it.
