Information - The Clifford Road Tunnels VE Day special

A WWII Home Front Experience – PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS THE CLIFFORD ROAD AIR RAID SHELTER MUSEUM

VE Day – special Opening! Live Music from Martlesham Ukulele Group and Phoenix Jaz

Underneath the playground at Clifford Road Primary School there are three WWII tunnel networks waiting to be explored!

  • Pizza slices to buy
  • Local Societies with stalls
  • Cream teas and cakes

The tunnels are located under the playground at Clifford Road Primary School in Ipswich. Other shelter tunnels have recently been discovered under the playground, left untouched for 80 years! We aim to bring the history under the playground to a wider, inclusive audience.

We are open to the public from from 1100 am to 3pm and are located at Clifford Road Primary School, Ipswich, IP4 1PJ. Entrance on Tennyson Road, parking available in surrounding streets.

Wheelchair access

Please note that due to the steep and narrow steps down into the tunnels themselves, and the uneven nature of the floor in the tunnels, the tunnels are not accessible for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues. You are still very welcome to view some of our artifacts that we have in our welcome room above the tunnel, and enjoy a tea and some cake.

  • £5 adults
  • £2.50 children
  • £4.00 concessions

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
