Markus Schleinzer’s Rose screens at King Street Cinema — Austria’s official entry to the 99th Academy Awards, ahead of its UK release in February 2027.
The film
Set during the Thirty Years’ War, a mysterious soldier with a disfigured face arrives in a secluded Protestant village in Germany, producing a document claiming to be heir to an abandoned farmstead. He earns the villagers’ trust as a hard-working, God-fearing man — but his acceptance rests on an impossible deceit. It is the true and twisted story of a deceiver of land and folk who, defying her birth as a woman, lived as a man.
