Information - Life’s Rich Tapestry

Tapestry weaving is an ancient craft, used to decorate homes and textiles since people began to weave. Tapestry artist Liz Chester will explore the language of the textile and why it is important now.

Tapestry weaving is an ancient craft, used to decorate homes and textiles since people began to weave. The language of weaving has become entwined in our language and while the art form has largely fallen out of fashion, it is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Liz Chester will introduce the language of the textile, explore some of the history behind the art form and discuss why this slowest of the art forms is still produced today.

Elizabeth Chester – Artist Biography
Liz Chester is a woven tapestry artist based in Ipswich, Suffolk. Her work uses form and line to create compositions which lend themselves to the colour and texture of a textile medium. Tapestry was once the fine art of choice for the aristocracy of Western Europe and part of the challenge of working in this medium is to create more affordable domestic items which are meaningful in our modern world.
Liz was born in Scotland and at the age of 15 was trained by professional tapestry weavers in Caithness. She took redundancy from a career in IT and has been developing her creative practice since 2009. Recent work increasingly focuses on relationships between wild and human environments and the wild world’s struggle for survival.

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
