Craftivism – The gentle art of protest

Using recycled materials and creative skills, banners and hangings are created to highlight serious issues and to encourage everyone, especially those in power, to make necessary changes.

In Spring 2021 the group handcrafted ‘lungs’ which were sent to every Borough and County Councillor with responsibility for Ipswich and the two MPs to highlight the concerns about dirty air pockets in Ipswich.

Banners were created by the Craftivists that made their way up to Glasgow for the international COP 26 climate conference, joining many others to create a 1.5 mile long ribbon of protest. The panels were later repurposed into blankets for refugees, homeless and other vulnerable people.

A town centre vigil was held by members of the Craftivists to express solidarity with the ‘Mothers Rebellion’ movement.

Our textiles were displayed in the People and Planet event in the Ancient House in 2025 and aroused much interest.

If you have an interest in textiles and would like to get involved please come and join us.  We are planning a project to make re-useable bags for a local food bank.
