About Bez

There’s a lot to be said for simply being yourself, and no one embodies that more than Bez (Mark Berry). Known as the Energizer Bunny of indie music, Bez has journeyed from the heyday of the Happy Mondays to winning Celebrity Big Brother — all while staying true to his unique style and infectious energy.

Bez’s story began in 1980 when he was literally dragged on stage by school friend Shaun Ryder for the Happy Mondays’ debut live show at The Hacienda. His wild maraca shaking left a lasting impression — even leaving a wound on his hand — and caught the attention of Factory Records boss Tony Wilson. From that moment, Bez became an integral part of the band’s story and the Madchester scene.

Over the decades, Bez has been a constant presence through band reformations and side projects like Black Grape. Beyond music, he’s appeared on numerous TV shows including BBC Two science programs, Pimp My Ride, The Crystal Maze, Judge Romesh, and Celebrity Juice. Notoriously, he won Celebrity Big Brother in 2005, and even made headlines on Bargain Hunt by becoming the first participant ever asked to leave for bending the rules!

Bez is truly the Madchester icon — the dancing loon, the friendly Peter Pan of indie, a fixture of UK club nights such as And On The Sixth Day God Created Manchester, and a globe-trotting DJ known for bringing the party wherever he goes. Though years of pogoing may have left his hip a bit wonky, his spirit is as vibrant as ever as he keeps the indie beats rolling worldwide.

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
