Who doesn’t love a ‘bite’ of Jaws?

King Street Cinema is  celebrating to mark the 50th birthday of Programmer Dan Champion, the 50th anniversary of Spielberg’s iconic Jaws, and the cinema’s very own golden jubilee.

On Friday 29 August and Saturday 30 August, Ipswich’s only independent cinema will host special anniversary screenings of Jaws, inviting audiences to enjoy the much-loved summer blockbuster back on the big screen.

Dan, who shares his 50th year with Jaws and King Street Cinema, is inviting film lovers to head down to the venue at 6pm on Friday, for a chance to join the opening night celebrations.

With free popcorn on offer for King Street Cinema members, there will also be Jaws-themed birthday cake for all audience members to enjoy on a first-come-first-served basis, and limited-edition Shark Bite cocktails available to purchase at the cinema’s newly opened Overlook Bar.

Dan said: “It’s not every day you get to celebrate turning 50 alongside your all-time favourite film, and the cinema you love. King Street has always been a home for bold storytelling, and Jaws is the perfect way to mark the occasion. It’s iconic, timeless, and best enjoyed on the big screen. The triple celebration is a chance to reflect on our past, celebrate the present, and dive into what’s next.”

Friday’s event is part of King Street Cinema’s ‘50 Years in the Making’ initiative, which honours half a century of independent cinema in Ipswich, while galvanizing support for its future.

Dan continued: “Despite our rich history and this celebratory occasion, King Street Cinema has been facing a steep rise in operational costs and a decline in audience numbers since the pandemic, which is a challenge shared by independent cinemas nationwide.

“Keeping the cinema alive for the next 50 years rests on a renewed swell of community support. We’d love to see as many faces as possible come through the doors at our special screenings. Whether you’ve grown up with us, or it’s your first time here, you’re always welcome. Everyone has an important part to play in keeping independent cinema thriving in our region.”

You Don’t Need To Be An Expert To Get Involved In Pride in Place

One of the biggest misconceptions about community projects is that they're only for people with impressive CVs, professional backgrounds or years of experience sitting on committees. The Pride in Place programme - a government investment for Whitehouse and Stoke Park/Chantry of £20m into each area over 10 years - is trying to change that.
