About Ipswich Transport Society

The ITS has been going since 1957; the Ipswich Transport Museum devolved from the ITS in 1990 and is now a successful museum in its own right, featuring the history of transport and engineering in the local area.

The ITS was formed as the Ipswich Land Transport Society, and became the Ipswich Transport Society when ITM was divested in 1990.

In those early days (1957) the ILTS was formed of largely train spotting schoolboys, the IDHTS was formed in 1963 and consisted largely of ‘older generation’ people. I was a founder member, but left when it became clear that they were not interested in any practical work on preservation. I then formed the Ipswich Transport Preservation Group as part of the ILTS to carry out practical work; the early start is one reason why ITM is as good as it is.
