Information - Living On Air
Living On Air is a comedy showcasing the performance talents of Cohere Arts’ visually impaired drama company and new writing by the group’s director and 2024 Mercury playwright, Emma Bernard.
The play draws the audience into the world of Radio Bardwell, a fictitious radio station serving the Suffolk community in the 1970s. The station is dominated by its star presenter Tommy Platter, who for years has been waking up local listeners with his daily morning show promising ‘more music, less chatter.’ However, when a new presenter arrives to work at the station, the status quo is well and truly rocked.
Last year, the group carried out research for the play through an oral histories project delivered in partnership with Suffolk Archives. Through community events they captured the recollections of former listeners, presenters and employees of local radio station Radio Orwell, preserving memories of the heyday of local radio in Suffolk.
Living on Air writer and director Emma Bernard reflects: ‘The 1970s was an exciting era for local radio, and it has been so wonderful to be able to draw on people’s experiences of Ipswich’s beloved Radio Orwell when making this play. However, any similarities with our Radio Bardwell are purely coincidental!”
The play was developed with funding from Arts Council England and The National Heritage Lottery Fund, with support from New Wolsey Theatre and Eastern Angles. Performances have integrated audio description and BSL interpretation.
